Marcel Tardif: A Creative Soul Who Transforms Ordinary Wood into Extraordinary Art

Marcel Tardif lives in Neebing, Ontario, Canada with his wife Joyce and three daughters Elizabeth, Laurence and Olivia. He has been working with wood since 1978 when he was 19 years old. It all started when he would go to the Neebing Sawmill on Sundays to purchase scrap wood from them at discounted prices. It didn’t take long before he wanted to experiment with his new found wood so he went to school to learn how to work with it and create things from it.

Turning Tables

Marcel transforms ordinary wood into extraordinary art by creating elaborate, detailed designs and patterns. He says it’s all about being detail-oriented. With over 35 years of experience, Marcel is known for his innovative and high-quality craftsmanship. Each piece is different, he explains. I don’t make copies. If a customer places an order, I create a new design that fits their needs.

The Studio

Marcel's work shop, called Sumac Hill Creations, is located in a small district in Northwestern Ontario. When he goes there to create and his imagination has no boundaries, he sits on a bar stool and begins to turn.

The Workshop

I recently had a chance to tour his workshop, and take a look at some of his pieces. I was impressed by what I saw and certainly appreciate his artistry. Every turn piece he does is unique, no two alike. The next time you’re looking for something extraordinary for your home or as a gift, please consider one of Marcel’s creations. You will not be disappointed.

The Pick-Up Truck

From woodworking shop to gallery, Marcel’s truck is truly an extension of his soul. The vehicle is a fixture on Canada’s rural roads. Marcel’s creativity comes alive with each and every turn of the wheel and he knows exactly where to go to find just what he needs... right down to every last piece of wood that will make his masterpieces complete. I love being out there on my own; I feel at home in my pick-up truck.

Previous Projects

Marcel creates unique wooden art out of anything he can get his hands on, I love taking trash and turning it into treasure. My work is created with recycled wood. I use discarded pallets, part of old fences, logs taken from fires to name a few he said.

Next Steps

Develop an understanding of what drives you. The right word to describe yourself could very well be creative. While there are many aspects to being creative, they all share common characteristics such as flexibility, openness and spontaneity. These qualities can help you not only develop your artistic side but also make sound choices in other areas of your life, such as career and relationships.
